You Are Here

Will Nash's latest School project is You Are Here - Commissioned by Impact Art & West Sussex County Council.

The project brief is to develop a Wayfinding and School Campus identity for two new build schools in Bognor Regis.

The two sites must work individually reflecting the difference in scale and user, yet share a common thread. The artists will consider the specific needs, context and age ranges within the two new buildings and develop appropriate work in consultation with the schools and their wider communities. The artist will then need to work across the design team to ensure a transitional approach to the wayfinding and sense of progression for student, staff, parents and wider community users.

Explore the identity of the schools, the ideas of transition and moving (both physical movement and movement through time). Map student, staff and parents paths/journeys both into and around the current schools, sports centre and other buildings, Work with the BSF team and the schools project teams, students & staff to map the possible physical and mental journeys in and to the new building, the learning zones and the landscape.

The physical results will consist of - wayfinding functional sculptures outside the schools and/or architectural orientation graphics and signage inside and outside the school (this could range from the sign above the main entrance to pictograms, room numbers, area/year identity graphics, pathways/directions on and across the campus between the schools).

Summer in the Pavilion

Summer events in the Our Space Pavilion included workshops with local children involving Film, Dance, Costume and Sound, a more extensive account of these events will, I hope, follow in due course. For the time being here are some pictures of the workshops in action.

Pavilion Construction

I have just spent this morning at the school, C & G construction have been trial assembling the Pavilion to make sure it all goes together, it looks great - exactly how I was expecting it to look.
We are still having some trouble with the gabion below, the gabion cages arrived last week - all the wrong shape, so they were sent back Tom Bedford and C & G are working on a plan B to make a suitable gabion of our own. Anyway the pavilion is looking good...

Pavilion latest

The Foundations are laid in the courtyard. S & G construction have done a great job so far. A number of unmarked drainage pipes were uncovered during the dig, none were damaged, but it did mean that it took longer.

The Red Dishes are spun and the rest of the steelwork is being prepared by Aspect Metalcraft in Eastbourne.

The plan is to install the steelwork and the circular gabion seat in the week starting the 14th of April.
I am hoping to find a couple of volunteers to help me shape and fill the gabions with stones.

These pictures show lines on the gabions wall where the 32 individual gabion cages meet.
